Each year, the Sequatchie County Board of Education recognizes educators as its teachers and principals of the year. Four staff members are honored for 2025-2026.
From Griffith Elementary, honored was teacher Pam Anderson.
She began at Griffith in 1995 as a volunteer when her son entered kindergarten. After serving as a substitute teacher, first-grade assistant, and office staff member, she returned to college at age 50 and earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Tennessee Tech University in 2015. Anderson taught third grade for many years before transitioning to second grade in 2024.
Anderson grew up in Murfreesboro and graduated from Oakland High School in 1981. She and her husband, Billy, have been married for 43 years and are the parents of Matthew and Emily, and grandparents to McKenzie, Emma, Cole, Paxton, and Caroline. Their growing family includes daughter-in-law Hilarie, Emily’s partner Kyle, and granddaughter Kylie.
Teacher Krissy Evitts was honored from Sequatchie County Middle School.
Her peers state Evitts is a dedicated educator with a passion for creating an engaging, supportive, and student-centered learning environment for all. She has 23 years of experience in teaching. Outside the classroom, Evitts enjoys traveling with her husband, Joey, and their three children, Sam, Jack, and Millie-Cate, and is an active member of the community.
Recognized at Sequatchie County High School is Kelly Somerville in her 19th year of teaching.
A valedictorian of the SCHS Class of 2002, she graduated in 2006 as Magna Cum Laude with a Secondary Education degree with a specialization in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee at Martin, where she also played softball.
Somerville has been an SCHS math teacher since 2009 and currently serves as Math Department Chairman, head softball coach, Student Council sponsor, and coordinator of Homecoming Week.
She has been married for 15 years to Robbie, who also works in the Sequatchie County School System. They have two daughters at SCMS, Kennedy and Parker.
The Principal of the Year is Amy Land.
Originally from Chickamauga, Georgia, Land has been a local resident for nearly 30 years. After a successful career in sales management, she began her teaching career over 18 years ago as a math teacher at Sequatchie County High School. At SCHS she has served as math department lead, cheerleading coach, and sponsor for Leo Lions Club and Youth Leadership. She also led numerous school committees.
After 13 years in the classroom, Land transitioned into administration and has since served as both assistant principal and principal of Sequatchie County High School.
She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and her Education Specialist (EdS) degree from Tennessee Tech University. She lives in Dunlap with her husband, Dwain, and is the mother of Avery Land Campbell plus bonus daughter Madison Land Adkins, and also has four grandchildren.
