With memorable hits recorded as both a solo artists and as the leading singer of two different groups, John Waite will be performing in at Harris Park in Dunlap for the Independence Day holiday. Waite is the feature act for the City of Dunlap music festival, set for Saturday, July 4. There is no charge for general admission to enjoy the music and celebrate America’s 250th.
Waite, a native of Lancaster, England, was the lead singer of The Babys in the UK in the late 1970s. The group’s singles included “Isn’t It Time,” “Back on my Feet Again,” and “Every Time I Think of You.”
In 1984, Waite’s solo hit, “Missing You,” made it all the way to #1 on the Billboard pop chart. The song has hundreds of millions of Spotify listens and is one of the most memorable rock-pop songs of the decade.
Waite’s other solo hits in the period included “Change,” “Every Step of the Way,” and “If Anybody Had a Heart.”
Later in the decade, Waite, along with members of The Babys and Journey, formed the band Bad English which enjoyed further success. Waite hit #1
again with the band’s hit, “When I See You Smile,” and other releases included “Price of Love, “Possession,” and “Straight to Your Heart.”
The band’s song “Best of What I Got” was a top 10 single on the U.S. Rock Chart and was featured in the popular film “Tango and Cash.”
Waite’s credits include 10 solo albums, five with The Babys, and two with Bad English. Waite continues to tour regularly with shows scheduled throughout the country this year. On August 23, he is scheduled to return to Tennessee for a show in Gatlinburg at the Mountain Music Fest.

July 4 in Dunlap includes the long-running parade, sponsored by the Sequatchie County Rescue Squad, along with activities all day at the Harris Park, and the holiday-concluding fireworks display. A benefit street dance on Cherry Street is scheduled for the night before, July 3.
