Music, fireworks, a parade and other activities are part of the July 4 celebration each year in Sequatchie County, with special events this year set to recognize America’s 250th.
On July 4, the local 1976 time capsule will be opened at the Sequatchie County Courthouse at 10:30 a.m. Another time capsule is being sealed the same day, with its opening scheduled for July 4, 2076.
Residents are encouraged to submit items that reflect everyday life in 2026. Suggested items include photographs of families and community events, letters to future generations, newspaper articles, school memorabilia, local business information, event programs, community organization materials, maps, brochures, and other items that capture the spirit of Dunlap and Sequatchie County.
On July 4 at 1:50 p.m. at Harris Park, Sequatchie County Veterans will “Ring the Bell” as part of the National Bell Festival. Cathedrals and churches, community organizations and historical structures, national parks and memorials, and people from coast to coast are encouraged to gather and contribute to the sound. Bells are to ring 13 tolls, referencing the original 13 colonies that composed the United States.
The Freedom Street Dance kicks off the celebration on Friday, July 3, starting at 5:00 p.m. at the corner of Cherry Street and Walnut Street. The annual parade, sponsored by the Sequatchie County Rescue Squad, starts at 9:00 a.m. July 4 with the theme of “Happy Birthday America.” Music, food, and fun at Harris Park continues throughout July 4 with headliner John Waite performing at 7:30. The second annual Logan Cartwright Burnout Competition takes place at Dunlap Restaurant at 2:00. The large fireworks show begins at 9:00 p.m.
