Starting with the Sequatchie County Election Commission in 1982, with former Administrator of Elections Helen Barker, Carolyn Cates was recognized for her decades of service with a state resolution on July 2. Joined by family members and friends from the election commission, Cates received a framed copy of the resolution from State Representative Ron Travis.
“Carolyn has been instrumental in upholding the highest standards of election integrity and fairness,” said current Administrator of Elections Jerrie Holland.
“I’ve worked with four great administrators,” said Cates, “Helen Barker, Donald Britt, Linda Pittman-Tate, and now, Jerrie,”
Cates added she has made many friends working in the local elections and she looks forward each election cycle to seeing voters she may have not seen since the previous election.
“The main thing that has changed is all the advances in the voting technology,” Cates said. “Things have been made a lot easier for the voters. And there’s no way anyone can cheat, if they wanted to try.”
Cates said she is pleased to be part of the State of Tennessee voting process, due its national recognition for voter integrity.
Among those attending her presentation were Sequatchie County Election Chairperson Rickey Hickman; Representative Travis; former election administrator Linda Pittman-Tate; Holland; election commission members Ginger Maxwell and Carolyn Sims; deputy administrator Shayla Swan; Carolyn’s son, Brent Cates; and Zach Barker, grandson of former Election Administrator Helen Barker and son of the late, former election commissioner Benny Barker.
