A vehicle owner came home after being out of town for several days and discovered a 2006 Saturn was missing, Dunlap Police Department (DPD) Chief Randy Phillips reported. A suspect, 45-year-old Derrick Harvey, allegedly took the vehicle and sold it to a scrapyard.
Chief Phillips said the owner reported the incident at the DPD office on June 23, after she had returned home.
“The Saturn was not running and had no battery installed,” Chief Phillips said.
The same day, the vehicle was located at a local scrapyard, the Chief continued.
“After speaking with a worker there, the owner learned it had been brought to the business by Mr. Harvey,” Chief Phillips said. “He had left a copy of his driver’s license so he was quickly identified.”
The theft reportedly took place on June 19 with Harvey driving away from the residence with the vehicle loaded onto a trailer, the Chief said.
Chief Phillips added, the vehicle was demolished before it was able to be recovered.
Harvey is charged with theft over $1,000 and has an upcoming court appearance scheduled.
