Replaced with time capsule to be opened in 2076
After anticipation grew in the months leading to July 4, a glimpse of life in Sequatchie County in 1976 was able to be viewed with the opening of a 50-year time capsule. An additional time capsule was buried and is set to be opened in 2076.
The 1976 capsule, dug up from the Sequatchie County Courthouse lawn, contained a number of documents and forms from local businesses and services. Also buried were school annuals, church bulletins, photos, letters from students to the future, and newspapers.
“There were some envelopes that had mold,” said County Executive Keith Cartwright. “It appears there was some water leaking into the time capsule over the 50 years, We’ve been cleaning up the envelopes and we’re getting an expert to come in with some chemicals for it. We plan to have them ready for everyone in the next few days.”
Executive Cartwright said the summer of ‘76 was between his eighth grade and freshman years.
“We had Patsy Pope as one of our teachers and she gave us a summer project of collecting items for the time capsule,” he recalled. “We placed them at the banks, the post office, and the electric co-op, probably other places.”
He added, “One of our things to do was writing letters to the future. I haven’t come across mine yet and don’t remember what I wrote. It was probably something silly, being that age, but I’m looking forward to seeing it.”
“Things have changed a lot,” Executive Cartwright said. “At that time I didn’t really see how much everyone visited people and we sat outside and talked on the porch. Some didn’t have air conditioning, which was part of it. But people just spoke more to their neighbors back then, it seems.”
The new capsule contains letters, written from residents to their grandchildren, along with information on local businesses, events, and activities, school memorabilia, and items which capture the spirit of life in Dunlap and Sequatchie County in 2026.
