    American Legion Post 190 meets last Tuesday

    American Legion Post 190, Dunlap, holds its monthly meetings on the last Tuesday of each month. The executive committee meets at 5:00 p.m. and the general business meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. Meetings are held in the Legion Hall on Fredonia Road. All members are encouraged to attend. Any veteran interested in joining the American Legion or learning more about the organization and the benefits of membership is encouraged to attend a general business meeting.TS38

    Legal Aid of East TN at courthouse in Dunlap

    Legal Aid of East Tennessee will conduct local client intake at the Sequatchie County Justice Center on Wednesday, September 27 at 9:00 a.m. Legal Aid of East Tennessee is a free service for low income Tennesseans and senior Tennesseans with civil legal problems, including consumer, housing, veteran’s benefits, and government benefits issues such as food stamps, unemployment and TennCare.     Community Thrift Store in Dunlap is closing

    On Wednesday, September 27, the Dunlap Community Center Thrift Store, located at 140 Cherry Street, will officially close its doors, with the possibility of relocating. The center has assisted hundreds of families over the years with the generous support of the community.     The deadline for adding names of Sequatchie County veterans to the Memorial Park wall is September 28 for engraving in October prior to Veterans Day. Cost is $100. Veterans must bring in their DD-214 to the office at 171 Church Street in Dunlap. Office hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Shirts and caps are for sale to support the Veterans Memorial Park. Donations are welcome.     Names are now being accepted for the Wall at the Sequatchie County Veterans Memorial Park until September 28. Any veteran who resides in or has resided in Sequatchie County and has an honorable discharge from the military or is currently serving is eligible for this honor.     VFW 5772 celebrating 118th anniversary

    The Veterans of Foreign Wars, VFW, is celebrating its 118th anniversary on Friday, September 29. Members of the Sequatchie County Memorial VFW Post 5772 will be at Tractor Supply that day to help celebrate VFW Day and talk about the work of the VFW, both locally and throughout the organization. The nation’s oldest major veterans’ organization, the VFW was formed in Columbus, Ohio in 1899 by 13 veterans of the 17th Infantry Regiment who fought on Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Initially called the Veterans of Foreign Service, it merged with two other veterans’ associations in 1914 to form the VFW, which now totals 1.7 million members. TS39

    Commodities distribution on September 29

    The Southeast Tennessee Human Resource Agency will be distributing USDA commodities to eligible Sequatchie County residents on Friday, September 29, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the SETHRA office in Dunlap. You must be signed up in order to receive commodities on this day. You can call the office at 949-2191 to make an appointment to get a card until Wednesday, September 20, 2017. All you have to provide is proof of income for all household members or proof of category eligibility to get your commodity card. Eligibility will be based on total household income not in excess of the State-established maximum percentage of the poverty line for the appropriate household size or category eligibility or category eligibility. In accordance with Federal law and USDA policy, SETHRA is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. T37S38

    A quilt show, sponsored by Family and Community Education Clubs, will be held Saturday, September 30 at the Sequatchie County Fair building, 103 Heard Street in Dunlap. For more information, call the UT Extension office at 949-2611. Quilts can be entered free of charge between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Viewing of quilts is from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $3 per person, with children under 8 admitted free.     A fundraiser workshop on mushrooms at the Fredonia Mountain Community Center will be held Saturday, September 30 from 10:00 a.m. until noon.
