    The Education Opportunity Center (EOC) provides free assistance to help residents reach their educational and career goals. Marla King, an education advisor with EOC, who formerly assisted students at the Chattanooga State Sequatchie/Bledsoe campus, will now be scheduling appointments at the Sequatchie County/Dunlap Chamber of Commerce on Thursdays, by appointment, from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. General education courses are offered at both Sequatchie and Bledsoe County High Schools. The center serves Bledsoe, Grundy, Hamilton, Marion and Sequatchie counties, and can assist with adult high school completion programs, choosing a college and a major, filing for FAFSA, searching for scholarships and grants, and overcoming federal student loan default.   • BBQ and scrimmage set for August 3

    The Sequatchie County Quarterback Club is having a BBQ and scrimmage on Friday, August 3, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets for the meal (BBQ pork sandwich, pickle, slaw, baked beans, chips, cookie and drink) are $10 and available from any Indians football player or Cates Street Pharmacy, or can be purchased at the door. The event is sponsored by Mountain Valley Bank and all proceeds support the Indians football team. Sequatchie County will be playing the Tyner Rams, 2017 2A state runner-up, for the scrimmage to kick off the 2018 season.TS31

  • Music on the Mountain planned

    Music on the Mountain is held at the Cagle Community Center on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. A covered dish meal is served at 5:30 p.m., followed by a jam session in the library for beginning musicians and those who don’t have a group.   • Cowboy Church is held on second Saturdays

    Cowboy Church at the Tennessee Guest Ranch is held on the second Saturday of each month, through November, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with food, fellowship and fun. The next church service is planned for September 8 and includes free pony rides for children 12 and under, chuck wagon chow appetizers for the family and meet the horses in the stables. At 6:00 p.m., its Cowboy Church with a live horse presentation, music and a message (rain or shine, indoor facilities available).   • Veterans Park accepting names for wall

    Names are now being accepted for the Sequatchie County Veterans Memorial Park Wall. Honorably discharged veterans, who are past or present residents of Sequatchie County, will need their DD-214 and $100 cash or check. Partial payments can be arranged through the end of September. Signature bricks, T-shirts, sweatshirts and caps will be available for sale. The Veterans office is located at 171 Church Street in Dunlap. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. For more information, call 949-9000.

  • Mohls to sing this weekend

    Folk Mountain Gospel, Don and Donna Mohl, will be performing at the Cagle Community Center’s Music on the Mountain, Thursday, August 16. A covered dish dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m., followed by music at 6:30. The Mohls blend biblical and traditional instruments with their voices to create a mountain and folk style gospel. Everyone is invited to attend.

    The Southeast Tennessee RC&D and Sequatchie County Soil Conservation District will be conducting its second annual waterway cleanup on the Sequatchie River on Saturday, August 18 at 9:00 a.m. The parking and one of the launch sites will be at Canoe the Sequatchie, located at Hwy. 127 and John Burch Road. The second launch site is Humpback Bridge and those who are launching from there will be shuttled to that location from the Canoe the Sequatchie meet up. Breakfast will be provided before launch.   • Food preservation classes scheduled

    The Summer Saturday Series of Food Preservation classes, offered by the UT Extension Service, will be held Saturdays, August 25 and September 15, at Sequachee Valley Electric from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Participants in the August class will learn about jams and pickling. Cost is $20. This is a hands-on class and participants will go home with a jar of strawberry-kiwi jam and a jar of sweet pickles.
