Charline Hobbs Johnson

Charline Hobbs Johnson, 94, passed away February 21, 2024 at NHC Healthcare in Dunlap, Tennessee.

She was born Charline Evella Heard to the late Creed Bates Heard and Lora Freiley Heard on June 4, 1929 in Dunlap, Tennessee. As a child growing up in Dunlap in the 1930’s and 40’s, she was raised in a faithful Christian home. Her paternal grandfather, Judge James Houston Heard, served as superintendent of the Methodist Sunday school for 25 years. Her maternal grandfather, Professor William V. Freiley, served as principal and superintendent of Sequatchie County Schools. Also, around 1907, he was selected, along with two other men, as the first elders of the Dunlap church of Christ.

Charline’s strong Christian family led her to be a faithful Christian all her life. She loved her family—not only her immediate family, but also her nieces, nephews and her church family. She was employed at Sequatchie General Hospital for over 20 years as a CNA and ward clerk.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband of 38 years, Carl Hobbs, and her second husband of 11 years, Clay Johnson; son, Dale Hobbs; sisters, Donnie Lee Jones, Evelyn Potter, Willma Johnson and Louise Sims; and brother, William Heard.

Survivors include daughter, Carlene Henry (Sammy); grandchildren, Janie Daniel (J.J.), Clint Hobbs and Sheri Whitmire (Anthony); great-grandchildren, Abigail Whitmire, Carly Hobbs, Ashley Hobbs, Jaydrian VanDyken (Michael) and Jerrick Daniel; and great-great-grandchildren, Timber VanDyken and Tucker VanDyken.

The family wants to thank her caregivers for all their help and support these last few years, Mary Penley, Cathy Cunningham, niece Brenda Gaston, to the wonderful staff at NHC Sequatchie and Hospice of Chattanooga. A very special thanks goes to a special friend, Stephanie Layne, for the many, many hours she spent with Charline.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 24 at the Dunlap church of Christ. Burial followed in Sequatchie County Memorial Gardens.

Ewton Funeral Home & Cremation Center was in charge of arrangements for Ms. Charline Johnson and they ask that you share your memories and condolences for her family on their website at www.ewtonfuneralhome.com.
