James Kelly

James  William “Ham” Kelly, 93, of Dunlap, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at NHC Healthcare in Dunlap.

He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He attended Dunlap United Methodist Church where he was a member of Victory Bible Class and also attended Welch Chapel United Methodist Church. 

He served on the Board of Directors of Mountain Valley Bank for more than 60 years, Dunlap Lions Club for 55 years, Board of Directors and Treasurer of Dunlap Industries for 43 years, American Legion-Harvey Merriman Post #190 for 40 years, board  member of the Sequatchie County Veterans Memorial Park, Sequatchie County Memorial Post 5772 of the VFW, and the Chattanooga City Farmers. 

Mr. Kelly was the sixth child and only son of W.L. and Annie Hickman Kelly.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Grace Layne Kelly; daughter, Mary Jim Cogdell; and sisters, Thelma, Ruth, Margaret and Betty.

Survivors include his son, William L. “Chip” (Jill) Kelly; daughter, Susan (Lynn) Merriman, of Dunlap; sister, Irene K. Griffith, Dunlap; sister-in-law, Evelyn Layne, Dunlap; son-in-law, Charles Cogdell, Cleveland; six grandchildren, Kelly (Joshua) Bishop, James (Sloane) Cogdell, Joshua (Stephanie) Merriman, Hannah Merriman, William L. Kelly, and Pamela (Cory) Turner; six great-grandchildren and two on the way; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 21 in Ewton Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Doug Silvers officiating. Burial was Friday, April 22 in Kelly Family Cemetery with full military honors by Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Sequatchie Valley Veterans Memorial Park, P.O. Box 1565, Dunlap, TN 37327.
