Rev. Young Smith

Rev. Young H. Smith Sr., 76, of Chattanooga departed this life for his heavenly home on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, after a long, courageous battle with dementia.

Rev. Smith spent several years as an evangelist and pastor and hosted a gospel radio program for 12 years on WJOC. An ordained minister in the Assembly of God, he was a member of North Hixson Church of God. He will be transferring his membership from the North Hixson Church of God to heaven. His desire was for all of his family to meet him in heaven. His passion in life was his family, which he dearly loved. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and camping. He enjoyed wood crafting which included his mobile Eagles and big white Christmas Deer that he shipped to several states. 

Young worked for Dixie Yarns Lupton City Plant for 16 years, owned a construction business for 25 years and had a lawn service for six years. He was a hard worker. He was born in Cochran, Georgia on September 18, 1936. He lived in Sandersville, Georgia until he moved to Chattanooga in 1962 on the day he married the love of his life, Carolyn Hickey Smith, whom he had met in Warner Robins, Georgia while she was visiting her family. Young loved Chattanooga and the mountains. He purchased a home in 1966 and raised his family in the Hill City area. 

He was preceded in death by his son, Tony Smith, of San Francisco; parents, Hansel Smith and Lottie Mae Smith Hitchcock; step-dad, John Hitchcock, all of Sandersville, Georgia; brothers, Wallace, Roy, Wayne and Wendell Smith; sisters, Dorothy Tanner and Clarice Wiliford; grandson, Jonathan Rogers; father and mother-in-law, Charlie Hickey and Mary Hickey; and sister-in-law, Ivory McAbee.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Carolyn; sons, Young (Ruthe) Smith Jr. and Charles (Chris) Smith; daughters, Yvonne (Dennis) Rogers and Wanda (Richard) Boyd; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Christopher (Jessica) Smith, Dylan, Ainsley, Camden and Paige Smith, Bryan Smith, Jeremy Rogers, Melissa (Tim) Kreider, Alexander and Amelia, Sherri (Rod) Murphy, Jagger and Lake; special friend, Willanna Roy, who he loved like a daughter; brothers, Kelly (Brenda) Smith, Ivey (Lois) Smith and Julian (Patricia) Smith; sister, Lois Kramp; sisters-in-law, Marie Hickey Davis, Betty Smith and Doris Smith; brother-in-law, Marty (Jeanette) Hickey; and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He will be missed by all.

Services for Rev. Smith and his son, Tony who passed away July 7, 2013 in San Francisco were held Friday, August 2 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Rick Smith officiating.

Burial will follow at McGlothan Cemetery.
