Gretchen Day
Gretchen Hamilton Day, 82, of Oak Ridge departed this life at NHC in Dunlap on Thursday, July 12, 2012.
She was a member and former deacon of First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge, a former member of the Arisa Garden Club and a master gardener. She received her BS degree from Tennessee Tech and MS from the University of Tennessee and was employed as a chemist for 43 years by Martin Marietta Energy Systems.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Allen and Bernice Stuart Hamilton; and sisters, Jewell Bryant and Dean Hicks.
Survivors include her husband, James H. Day of Oak Ridge; step-son, Dr. James H. (Dianne) Day; step-grandchildren, Taylor Day and Channing Day of Ventura and Janel Day of Denver, Colorado; sisters, Martha Lou (Wayne) Reynolds of Dunlap and Barbara (Danny) Buffington of Texarkana, Texas; brother-in-law, Paul Hicks of Chattanooga; nephews, Ronnie and Jerry Buffington and Dale Bryant; niece, Donna Amussen and several cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 14 in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Gerald Casson officiating. Burial was in Chapel Hill Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Dale Bryant and Tanner Bryant, George Hamilton Jr. and George Hamilton III, Ron Buffington and Ben Condra.

I have fond memories of Gretchen having worked with her at K-25 in the Laboratory Department. I enjoyed seeing her at the polling station in the Woodland Precinct as well. Gretchen attended my mother’s receiving of friends and personally expressed her condolences. Heaven has gained an angel. R.I.P. dear Gretchen
