After a reported argument at a Dunlap home, a 16-year-old boy shot and injured his older brother, according to Chief of Police Clint Huth.
At about 6:18 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, Dunlap police officers responded to the shooting incident at the residence on Main Street in downtown Dunlap, he said.
“The initial reports were that a male subject had been shot. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found a 22-year-old male subject in the front yard, shot in the left leg,” said Huth.
He noted, family members of the subject were providing first aid to the injured victim.
The shooting suspect, a 16-year-old male and brother to the victim, was still at the scene of the incident. The suspect was initially taken into custody and transported to the Dunlap Police Department, Huth said. Sequatchie County Juvenile Officer Kim Dean was notified and responded to the incident.
Detectives with the Dunlap Police Department found the incident began with the two brothers arguing earlier in the evening, said Huth. Their father had come to the residence in an attempt to resolve the situation.
According to initial reports, the 16-year-old was gathering some of his personal belongings before leaving, which included a 7mm bolt action rifle. As the two brothers were standing outside of the residence, the 16-year-old fired the rifle, striking the older brother in the left leg, explained Huth.
“Family members present at the incident quickly took control of the weapon and began to administer first aid to the victim,” said Chief Huth. “The weapon, along with other items, were taken into evidence by officers. At this point in the investigation, it appears that the weapon had been a gift to the 16-year-old from another family member.”
After interviewing the suspect, the 16-year-old told detectives he only wanted to scare his brother, but not shoot him.
He was charged with aggravated domestic assault and transported to the Putnam County Detention Center for juveniles in Cookeville.
The investigation of the incident is continuing and the identities of the individuals are not being released by the Dunlap Police Department.
Sequatchie County Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and further treated the victim. Upon being stabilized, the victim was transported to North Valley Medical Center and then flown to Erlanger Medical Center by emergency helicopter, Chief Huth added.
